Anna K. I feel that deep down, Dasiy's heart truly belongs to Gatsby. Before marrying Tom, she got cold feet, and my conclusion is that she did that because Gatsby popped into her mind once again.
Brady C. I agree with you Anna about how Gatsby popped into her mind again right before she got married and maybe that's why she didn't want to marry Tom.
Melissa G. I think Daisy loves Tom. But she really wants to be with Gatsby. She doesn't know what way to go. She hates to leave Tom. Tom doesn't think that Daisy will leave him.
Bekah G. I don't think that Daisy truly loves Tom or Gatsby. She is too flighty. She does what she thinks she is suppose to do, instead of what she wants to do. If she truly loved Gatsby she wouldn't have been deterred by his being poor, and if she truly loved Tom she wouldn't be having an affair with Gatsby.
Ashley B. I agree with you Bekah, Daisy really does just do what she thinks she is supposed to and not what she wants to do. That is a very good point.
Maria S. I totally agree with Bekah. Daisy doesn't have a true love in this story because she messed it up in the beginning when she was first with Gatsby and now with Tom.
Allison H. I agree with you. I believe that her affair has to do something with money. She is afraid of losing her wealth. That is why she wont leave Tom because he has old money
Melissa G. I agree with Bekah. She doesn't know what she should do and we don't know if she loves either one she just thought it was right for her to marry Tom.
Brady C. I believe that Daisy loves Gatsby more because before her wedding she was holding a letter in her hand and I believe that it could have been from Gatsby and maybe that's why she was drunk before her wedding too. I also think that she doesn't know what love is because I think that Diasy can't really leave Tom for Gatsby though because she is afraid and might have some feelings for him as well.
Abby Mahoney I agree I think that she is also just dependent on others and cant make a decision for her self therefore she is not able to leave Tom becaus she is indecisive with what she wants.
Alison B. I think Daisy doesn't truly love either man. If she loved Gatsby to begin with, she shouldn't have married Tom while he was away. Now that Gatsby is back in the picture she is falling for Gatsby again, proving she doesn't love Tom.
Yes but if she didn't love either man there wouldn't be a point to having Gatsby and Daisy having the past relationship put in the story, I think thats important to who she really loves. Jessie W
Brandon C I think Daisy doesn't love anyone because she is falling in love with Gatsby, which shows she doesn't love Tom anymore and she could have married Gatsby before he went away.
Melissa B. Since Daisy has a suspicion that Tom doesn't love her as much as before, she's starting to get over him too and secretly move on. Thats why I believe that Daisy is leaning more towards Gatsby.
Kendall K I think while Daisy was waiting for Gatsby to come back from war she met Tom and figured she needed someone else so settled for him...rebound.
Josie H I think the same thing. Her heart still belongs to Gatsby but she figured she might as well move on with her life since she isn't getting any younger.
Jessie W I believe Daisy truly loves Gatsby because when Gatsby and Tom are fighting over her she tries to get Tom to stop when he was going to talk about Gatsby, she was sticking up for Gatsby. Also when they are fighting she doesnt know what to do, she doesnt know who to pick I believe her head is telling her to stay with Tom because she married him and they don't have a bad life together and her heart is telling her Gatsby because she once loved Gatsby and I believe Daisy alwasy will. I think she does know what love is but she doesn't want to have to choose between love and having the life she has with Tom already.
Heidi E I believe that Daisy truly loved Gatsby in the past and now that she is in contact with him again all of her feelings are coming back. However, I believe Daisy is falling more in love with Gatsby's money now than anything, which tells me she doesn't really know what love is. Also, she married Tom even though she cried and drank until she was drunk. If you were in love why would you have to do that?
Jenny B I agree with you. I think Daisy just likes Gatsby's money now. When Gatsby was showing Daisy his possessions, Daisy was more impressed with them than with just being with Gatsby. Therefore, I don't think she really loves him.
Ashley B. I think Daisy has very strong feelings for Gatsby, but doesn't want to betray her husband, Tom. She has a daughter and is well off with Tom, but she has stronger feelings for Gatsby. After all she did cry her eyes out the day before her wedding. I feel like Daisy doesn't know what love is because she thought she loved Gatsby and he left her. Now with tom she does what she thinks will keep him happy, thus making her happy. Now Gatsby is in the picture again and she doesn't know what to do about all of these new found feelings.
Maria S. I think that Daisy may have know what the true meaning of love when she was with Gatsby in the very beginning but the he left for war and she lost the definition of true love since hers was broken. Then she met Tom and thought she had met true love again but she still almost didn't marry him because Gatsby was still on her mind and in her heart. Then she completely lost her thoughts of love when she found out about Toms affair but tried to revive it with Gatsby but I think it will never be the same as it had been before with her and Gatsby.
Maria S. I think that Daisy did know what love was at one time and that was with Gatsby. But then Gatsby left for war and I feel she lost the true meaning of love because she settled for Tom thinking she found love again even though she was hesitant to marry him. Then when she found out Tom had an affair with someone she lost the whole meaning of love so I think that Daisy does not love anyone honestly in this book, she is kind of just going along and now that Gatsby is back in her life she thinks they may have a chance even though it will never be the same.
Jenny B. I don't think Daisy knows what true love is. She wouldn't have married Tom in the first place if she did. I feel like Daisy might just go with the person who makes her feel good at that point in time. That's why she likes Gatsby right now; he lavishes her with attention.
Josie H I think that Daisy truely have a deep love for Gatsby whether she wants to believe it or not. I feel as though she settled for someone else in Gatsby's absence for war. To me she plays off very well at showing no emotion for Gatsby on the outside. She sort of tries to hide the fact that she still has feelings for Gatsby.
Hannah H. I believe Daisy loved Tom at one point and She loved Gatsby at one point but not anymore and she is just doing what she thinks she should do.
Jack O. I don't think Daisy ever truly loved Tom and she either always loved Gatsby or she never loved either of them and she just feels that its her duty as a woman in the 1920's to get married to a man.
Curtis B. I would disagree with the never loved Tom just due to where in the book where she wanted to always know where he was after the honeymoon. But I really like the 1920's married part.
Matthew Z. I think she loves Gatsby. Even though she said she loved tom before, that was only because she thought Gatsby was dead. but now he is back, she loves him.
Haley R. I think that Daisy loves Gatsby, and the only reason she married Tom is because Gatsby went away to war. I dont think she ever truly loved Tom. Its always been Gatsby.
Curtis B. Just throwing it out there Daisy is my least favorite character of the book. She doesn't tell the truth to anyone it seems. If she loves anyone right now I'm going to say it is Tom due to the fact of how they were talking at the end of chapter 7 when Gatsby believed she was locked up in her room away from him and how Nick saw no dislike between Daisy and Tom. AS far as if she knows what love is. Daisy doesn't seem to want to pick sides so instead she lies to both. She is shady to me as of chapter 7. I hope she proves me wrong.
Allison H I believe that Daisy does not truely love Tom or Gatsby. I believe that she is in love with the fact of having financial security.Gatsby even says that "Her voice is full of money." Since Tom has Old money and Gatsby has new money,She doesn't want to leave Tom just for that purpose. I do believe that she likes Gatsby more than she likes Tom, but I do not think she truely loves him.
Jill W. In my opinion, I believe that Daisy does indeed have feelings for both. I wouldn't say that she has ever loved either though. She was obviously swept off her feet by Gatsby when he lied to her about having money in hopes to impress her and win her love. I don't think she ever loved him before the war. She may have been comfortably happy due to the fact that he was able to make her smile and laugh. She also got the feeling that she was wanted, but once Gatsby went off to war, she had to find someone else to make her feel that way. I believe Tom was some sort of rebound--one after the infatuation of being with Gatsby failed to come true. Eventually she may have developed some feelings for Tom after she put the thoughts of Gatsby in the back of her mind, but she never really loved either of them. After being married to Tom for so long, the feelings she once had kind of drifted away and once she realized who Gatsby was, all the feelings she once had came flooding back in a way that may have been strong enough to convince herself that she did love him, when in all reality it was just a strong infatuation. In my eyes, all Daisy really sees is the idea of happiness with money.
Laila S. I agree with you, Jill, that Daisy didn't seem to love Gatsby before the war, that she was "comfortably happy," to use your words. The book did say that she only fooled around with the army officers. I don't believe that she ever took any of her relationships seriously.
Laila S. I feel like even Daisy isn't quite sure who she loves. She's caught in between Tom and Gatsby, and no matter who she chooses, someone's going to end up losing. In the flashback in Chapter 4, Daisy seemed very happy with Gatsby, and she was heartbroken when he left. However, she seemed to be equally happy when she met Tom. Daisy never actually fell apart until she got Gatsby's letter. Then, when she and Tom got back from Santa Barbara, she seemed to be madly in love again and forgot all about Gatsby. Now, in Chapter 7, Tom and Gatsby finally confront each other, and she doesn't know who to pick. She agrees with Gatsby that she did love him, but she can't bring herself to tell Tom that she never loved him either. I don't believe that Daisy is the kind of person that would lie to Tom and tell him she loved him if she really didn't.
I believe that Daisy truly loves Gatsby. I have a feeling that she knows Tom is cheating on her and she is just with him to get Gatsby back. I think she doesn't know what true love is and just wants a guy with the most money, but if shes going for Gatsby she would still have to have feelings for him since Tom is also a very wealthy man. Also if she didn't have feelings for Gatsby then why does she go to dinner with him and go to his parties? Kyle K
I feel like she only truly loves Gatsby. Her relationship with tom seems too cold and distant. They seem to forced in their relationship. While with Gatsby they seem real and truly in love.
Carmen S. I think Daisy is confused on what she wants. I think Daisy did love Gatsby before she she met Tom but then started to love Tom because of his money and now that her and Gatsby is in the picture again and has new money this time she loves him more. I think Daisy will always love Gatsby more. I now think that Tom will want Daisy to stay with him more than ever now that Myrtle died.
Coral z daisy loves tom. Gatsby is a creep because they just found out that he came to the wedding and stayed with jordan. Hes a creep and should back off!
Riley P I think that Daisy is confused to as who she really does love. I feel she "thinks" she loves both of them, but I feel like she really doesn't love any of them
Nikki N I think she really loves Tom deep down, but wants a perfect relationship where she can get whatever she wants with Gatsby.I just think that she should leave Tom bc he cheated on her and no one deserves to be cheated on.
Whom does Daisy really love? Give supporting evidence from the book. What does she do to lead you to believe this? Does she really know what love is? I think Daisy really loves neither. I think she really wants love and likes the idea of love but it's never been there for her, so she forced it. Gatsby wasn't there when she was ready so she settled on Tom and thought, "I'll learn to love him", honestly I just think Daisy loves herself, but that's good that she does, except she can't be messing with other people's feelings when she is trying to figure out her own. I don't think she knows what love is because I beleive she's never experienced it before, she "thinks" she knows, but if it was true love she wouldn't be questioning it between 2 people, she would just know. -Rachel M.
