Ryan W To me Gatsby is the most interesting because he is so mysterious. But i also think Nick is very important because he is the one telling the story.
Josie H To me i thingk is is so we can see prospective of those two through someone elses eyes. It makes you want to read it more when you don't know what either of those characters are thinking or what they their intentions are.
Heidi E. I think he chose to write through Nick because he doesn't want to give all of Daisy and Gatsby's feelings and insights away in the beginning. He doesn't want us to know what they're thinking but wants us to guess at what they are thinking by looking through Nick's point of view. Otherwise the characters wouldn't be as mysterious or interesting to us as readers.
Jenny B. I agree with Heidi and Josie. It's told in Nick's point of view so that the characters are more mysterious and so we get an overall view of the situation, not just one person's feelings.
Laila S. I think Fitzgerald chose to write the book through Nick's eyes because he is the only character that isn't personally involved in the plot. If anyone else narrated the story, the reader would receive a biased version of the events that happen.

I also just thought of this, what if Nick watching from the outside with unbiased accounts is another symbol of the eyes watching everything? Just a thought.
Matthew Z By telling the story from nick's perspective it makes the reader have to characterize Gatsby and Daisy indirectly. So people have to judge what the characters are like on their own.
Jill W I feel that he told it in Nick's perspective so that you could generalize characters in your own way more easily than if it was in Tom, Daisy's, or Gatsby's point of view. Putting it in Nick's perspective makes the story more of a mystery and makes you think more as to why characters do the things they do. If it would have been told in anyone else's perspective, the impression people would get would change immensely.
Hannah H. I think Tom is the most interesting because he has a wife and then he is cheating on her and in the movie trailers it makes it seem like daisy cheats on Tom with Gatsby later on in the book.
Danielle H I also agree with Hannah. Tom definitely has it coming for him. Hes a very interesting character. I think the affairs in this book are what makes most of the characters so interesting. Everyone likes to read about peoples dirty secrets!

I think Gatsby is the most interesting because he just appears in the book and Nick doesn't even know who he is, whereas Gatsby knows and remembers Nick. Nick wasn't expecting the man to be Gatsby at all. Also, I don't know enough about him which makes me more curious to read the book and find out more.

Laila S. Daisy is the most interesting character because she is much more complex than what she appears to be on the surface. She hides behind an almost childlike facade of exuberance, but after Tom gets the phone call from Myrtle in Chapter 1, Daisy reveals to Nick how truly unhappy she is.

Tom, Daisy, Jordan, Myrtle, and the Gatsby are all hiding someone or something from the public. Nick seems to have some sort of information or relation to each and every one of them. I have a feeling that he is supposed to be a sort of "human eye" and watch down on people like the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg.

He has little connection with any of the characters and that makes him describe and judge everyone kind of the same way.

He has a reputation of bad guy and is rumored to have killed someone, but at the same time seems very friendly and throws parties with hundreds of guests! He seems very complex and I think the mystery of who his character really is makes him the most interesting.

Riley P I feel as if Jay has been the most interesting charachter. We do not know much about him, and it keeps us wondering what his life is truly about. He is a very mysterious man and i feel like his backround has something to do with the way he is going about his parties.

Terri Loso. Yeah he is interesting, he seems to always be alone even though he always invites guests over, and no one knows much about him, but yet they attend his paries.
You have a very good point. He is always alone, yet he has hundreds of guests. Does that add depth to Gatsby or just make him pathetic? Do you feel the need to know the host at every party you go to?

Anna K. In my personal opinion, Daisy Buchanan is the most interesting character so far. She is interesting due to the fact that she stays with Tom even though she is subtly aware of his affair. Also, I believe she will be a major protagonist in the book and I'm excitied to see how her character develops.
Abby M I agree Anna. The fact that she is staying with Tom even though he is cheating makes me wonder. Daisy comes from money so it's not like she has to depend on him for that. I feel like Daisy just acts oblivious but actually is quite smart and just thinks that it'd be more of an advantage to act like she is uneducated and dontesn't know anything for her benefit.
Abby M I think that the most interesting character so far would be Daisy. We're finally learning about her past and how her and Gatsby's lives have crossed paths. I want to learn more about this love triangle and see how this all plays out.

I think Gatsby is the most interesting character because we know that he's going to play a big role in the book but we still don't know a lot about him. All the rumors about him keep me interested in the book because I want to find out what things are true about him.

ReplyDeleteSo far in the story, I am most interested by Gatsby. He has a reputation of bad guy and is rumored to have killed someone, but at the same time seems very friendly and throws parties with hundreds of guests! He seems very complex and I think the mystery of who his character really is makes him the most interesting.

ReplyDeleteI wish I could say a different character than everyone else but I agree, Gatsby is the most interesting. We haven't met or talked to him very much, just heard a lot of rumors about him. So it will be interesting to find out what is and isn't true.

I also think that Gatsby, as a character, represents the corruption of the "American Dream".

ReplyDeleteI feel as if Jay has been the most interesting charachter. We do not know much about him, and it keeps us wondering what his life is truly about. He is a very mysterious man and i feel like his backround has something to do with the way he is going about his parties.

ReplyDeleteIn my personal opinion, Daisy Buchanan is the most interesting character so far. She is interesting due to the fact that she stays with Tom even though she is subtly aware of his affair. Also, I believe she will be a major protagonist in the book and I'm excitied to see how her character develops.

DeleteI agree Anna. The fact that she is staying with Tom even though he is cheating makes me wonder. Daisy comes from money so it's not like she has to depend on him for that. I feel like Daisy just acts oblivious but actually is quite smart and just thinks that it'd be more of an advantage to act like she is uneducated and dontesn't know anything for her benefit.
